What's Cozy Cove Camp like

About 90 minutes north of Portland Maine, our 1,140 sq. ft. 4-season camp sets on just less than a 1 acre wood lot with 113 feet of lake frontage and was built in 1983. It is situated on the East side of Bald Head Island on the amazing Sheepscot Lake. The Camp is a 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom, single story with a loft that acts as a second story. The loft has a bedroom with two beds and an open area that can accommodate another sleeping area. The first floor has the master bedroom, a full kitchen, and living room. There is plenty of parking for 3 full-size automobiles. There is a fire pit in the back yard and a metal boat ramp for easy access to the lake. The camp is nestled in a small, quiet & cozy little cove just about 200 feet away from the open lake. There is also a bunk house with power and two additional twin beds great for teenagers that is typically not available for guest use; however, if you would like to use it we are sure arrangements can be made to accommodate you. There are neighbors to the right and left of our camp on the same side of the gravel road - no camps on the other side of the road; however, due to the wooded areas between the camps, they are hardly noticeable.

The area around the camp is wooded with a small and winding gravel road connecting all the camps on the East side of the island. You can see from the aerial pictures lots and lots of trees. As mentioned earlier, there is a camp on either side of us but not so close as to seemingly invade privacy - you will feel very secluded. There are the typical flying pests that are more of a nuisance than anything; however, we do recommend a good bug repellent with DEET to keep them at bay and wearing long pants and long sleeve shirts if at all possible. The gravel road forks at the causeway for the East and West side of the island and does not connect at the far end. Walks around the island to the west side will require a walk back to the east side by way of reversing your direction. There is a loon family in Cozy Cove that you can watch from the end of the dock. We call them Paul and Paula and they have been around for a few seasons now, and most recently, are nesting yards away from the end of the dock - yes, we got pictures!

There are modern conveniences like an inside sink, toilet and small shower, a gas cooking range, refrigerator & freezer, running water, electricity, electric baseboard heating, high-speed internet (when connected), good cellular coverage, and lots more. You are also not too far from civilization, really, only about 35 minutes from Maine's capitol Augusta and 95 minutes from Portland. Even though the rest of the world is not far away - it really feels like there is nobody else around, very secluded.

Can we go swimming

Well, the quick answer is Yes you can. However, be advised that Cozy Cove is part of the lake - it is not a manicured beach. Parts of the lake beyond the immediate area of the dock has leaves, rocks, branches and other debris down there that can hamper standing or walking around the cove. We now run an Aqua Thruster around he Dock area to help clear the area around the dock of muck to expose the sandy bottom and make it nice for wading-in. We have a floating swim-dock that you can very easily tow with the kayak out to the edge of Cozy Cove where swimming in water, over your head, is the spot - you may have to kayak to it or take the floating chair if you cannot swim that far. There is nothing wrong with the water - it is clean enough to drink. Some of the camps around the lake actually use the lake water as a camp water source. You can review the lake water quality at the Lakes of Maine website. Some of our guests say that they paddle straight out of the cove, slightly right, to the other side of the lake where there is a sandy beach-like spot where the water is so clear the rocks glistens in the water under bright sunshine. So, if swimming is really, really important to you, you may be disappointed in the cove itself. On a side note, the area just left of the dock (where we have been raking) the sandy bottom is exposed making a nice spot to take the plastic or cloth chairs and just sit in the water - very refreshing indeed!

So, how do we get there

You don't need a boat to get there, honestly, you can drive right to the front door! From Portland, Maine it takes about 90 minutes - Take Route 295 North or Route 95 North (Maine Turnpike) to Augusta Exit 113 (Route 3 East, Augusta - Belfast); Bear onto ME-3 East; Go about 22 Miles on Route ME-3 (Routes 202 / 9) to Bushey Shore (a paved way) on the right; Follow the winding Bushey Shore, over the causeway onto Bald Head Island then bear left at the folk onto Bald Head Island East; Continue onto Bald Head Island East for about 4 tenths of a mile. Our camp is on the left. You can view more detailed directions on the Directions page.

Help us help future stays

We certainly would appreciate a 5 star rating on Airbnb and we of course would like to do the same for you. But above that, we really, really would like you to send us any comments or considerations or ideas that you feel would improve your stay on how we could make the family vacation experience better for everyone. We, after all, want you to come back to Cozy Cove year after year. You can message us via Airbnb messaging or simply leave us a note in the house book when you leave for home. I know, I wish we could put a big bug-zapper around the entire camp but, unfortunately, Maine is a buggy state certain times of the year.

Get Unplugged... OR Not!

We believe the time spent at camp should be with family and friends and enjoying the time away from the hustle'n bustle of everyday work life. That means getting unplugged... so we do not provide internet service or telephone service or cable television. However, we do have a T.V with a DVD/Cassette player to pass the time when the weather won't cooperate. We also have several playing cards and board games like Monopoly, Parcheesi, and Clue to mention a few, are available for your enjoyment as well. There is an Apple TV device that can stream non-copyrighted videos from your Apple device via a Bluetooth connection.

We do believe that time spent at camp should be a vacation away from computers and work; however, we understand that sometimes, just sometimes, internet access is necessary. So, we NOW provide free high-speed cable internet (WiFi). And besides, the weather might not always cooperate with your vacation and to keep the kids from going insane, streaming their favorite movies on the web might just do the trick.

The Camp WiFi username is CozyCoveCamp2 (for 2.4 ghz) and CozyCoveCamp5 (for 5 ghz). The password will be posted in the Camp. If for some reason you need to reset the router, simply unplug the router, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in.

Also for your entertainment we provide a RoKu and an Apple T.V. device. When using the Apple T.V. device don't forget to log-off the system when you are done and especially when you end your stay. If you forget, just call us and we will close you out prior to the next guest arrival.

Have a Cook-Out

We provide a Char Broil, Classic 3-Burner Gas Grill for your enjoyment. Please take care of the grill and clean it when you are done. We try to keep the LP gas tank full but for some reason if you run out of fuel, you can have it refilled at Tobey's General Store about 10 minutes from camp on Route 3 - and save your receipt so we can reimburse you. Happy Grillin! For more information on the grill, refer to the Policies tab.

Go Kayak'n and More...

We provide a few non-powered watercraft to enjoy Sheepscot Lake to help make your stay at Cozy Cove Camp a fun experience. All we ask is that you take good care of our equipment and paddle responsibly. One of the kayaks we provide is a two seat Intex Excursion Pro Kayak. This two place kayak is rated as one of the best inflatables on the market. It is yours to use - please take care of it. When not in use, please secure it to the dock with a rope so it does not float away! or place far enough on land so the wind won't blow it away. The kayak may not be inflated, so, if you need to inflate it you can read the instructions or view the YouTube video. For more information on the use of our watercraft refer to the Policies tab. We do make available for your use 4 adult life vests and 2 youth (40# - 90# youts) life vests. We do not provide helmets.

We strongly recommend you purchase a waterproof phone protector. We use the Mpow Waterproof Phone Pouch for our iPhones and they work great. You can use the phone right through the bag and they float too! They are durable and inexpensive and well worth it.

We also strongly recommend that you wear water shoes. The lake is not a beach so there are rocks, leaves, branches, and other objects in the water than can injure your feet. In Cozy Cove there are also such hazards. We are raking the area around the dock but it will take some time to remove all the years of leaves and sticks covering the lake bottom. So, we like VIFUUR Water Sports Shoes. They are a quality slip-on and do a wonderful job protecting our feet.

New to boating or just need a refresher... goto to Boat Ed and read all about boating safety and see what boater education courses are available for you to take. Download and read the Maine Boater's Guide to Maine Boating Laws and Responsibilities here. The Boater’s Guide to Maine Boating Laws and Responsibilities covers Maine laws governing boating and provides general information about safe vessel operation. Use this handbook to familiarize yourself with steps to make all your boating outings safe and enjoyable. Remember, safety on Maine waterways is the responsibility of all boaters.

We have available a Dyer Dink (dinghy) made by The Anchorage, Inc. in Warren RI - you can see them on Facebook. Perhaps the most famous of the line, the 10-foot Dyer dhow is also the most versatile. The proven hard chine or flat bottom Dhow design lets you carry four people and more gear with greater stability than comparable round bottom dinghies. And of course, the sailing model is the perfect junior trainer. We allow guests use of the boat in the rowboat configuration. Only responsible youths 14 years or older will be allowed to use this boat without adult supervision.

Got Boat

The water depth at our dock is shallow. The water is typically 2 feet (or lower) to 3 feet deep around the dock depending on the time of year or day and where around the dock you are. If you have a boat that requires more water depth we are working on having a mooring (red buoy with our name on it) right at the entrance to Cozy Cove or about 200 feet from the dock where the water there is about 10 feet deep - we will update this site when we have more information. There are also other hazards in the cove such as sunken tree trunks, rocks, and branches. So be very careful maneuvering your boat to the dock. When inbound from the open lake it is best to favor the starboard side of center when entering the cove and of course just port of the center when heading from the dock for the open lake. If you'd like to rent a boat or a jet ski check this out.

//// MILFOIL ALERT \\\\

Currently, Jet Skis are allowed to be used on Sheepscot Lake. However, due to the threat of invasive aquatic organisms and plants the Sheepscot Lake Association has been toying with the idea of barring such recreational craft in the Lake. Several lakes in Maine now are prohibiting Jet Skis due to milfoil. Milfoil is a very dangerous aquatic plant species that is invasive to Sheepscot Lake. It is imperative that all watercraft be inspected and cleaned of milfoil and other invasive plants organisms that may harm our beautiful lake.

How does it happen? Most cases of milfoil infestation are the result of an unknowing boat owner transporting the weed from an infected waterway to a clean one. The weed wraps around the outboard propeller or is caught on the trailer during loading. Milfoil can survive for months (even dried up) and the next time the boat goes in the water off it comes and the weed is now planted, growing and spreading - Steve Baker / Three Ponds Protective Assoc. Founder/President - It takes only one 'dirty' boat to destroy a lake.

So... How do you help keep Sheepscot Lake Clean. The first thing is be aware of Milfoil and how dangerous it can be - so much so, that an entire Lake's eco system can be devastated, not to mention a permanent ban on boating. The second thing you can do is thoroughly clean your watercraft and trailers removing all weeds or other organic matter from all nook’s and cranny's. Please visit the Lake Environmental Association's website on Invasives to learn what Milfoil is and how to keep Maine's Lakes clean.

FREE Milfoil Inspections

During the prime summer months there usually are free milfoil inspections at the Sheepscot Lake Public Boat Ramp located on Route 3 (East) just prior to the right turn onto Bushey Shore.

NO WAKE ZONE
When entering Cozy Cove do NOT create a wake with your watercraft. Please operate at such a slow power setting so as NOT to create any waves. There are other No Wake Zones around the lake - please take notice.

Sheepscot Lake

Sheepscot Pond (as it is officially known) is the third largest lake in Waldo County, made the top 1 percent of the over 3,400 lakes in Maine according to the Downeast Magazine.

The eastern shore of this Palermo lake in Waldo County doesn’t have many camps, just mixed woods and marshlands ringing quiet coves where paddlers watch for loons. The Abenaki word Sheepscot means “many rocky channels,” and for those seeking whitewater, the Sheepscot River runs fast through a rocky stretch below the outlet, meeting Long Pond in Somerville. The Max Depth: 132 Feet and the lake Area is about 1,215 Acres

Accessibility

Accessibility in the sense considered here refers to the structural design of the camp, camp furnishings, services, or environments so as to be usable by people with disabilities.

Our camp is a single family seasonal residence. It is not handicap accessible. The camp does not conform to any specific Federal, State, or Local law or ordinance with regard to Accessibility. The doors, windows, shower, toilet, and grounds are not handicap or wheelchair accessible. Also, anyone who requires a walking aid such as a cane, walker, leg brace, or other mobility devices will find it extremely difficult, if not impossible, to ambulate inside the camp or outside on the property. The boat dock access, to or from, is not accessible for anyone requiring walking assistance devices or those that simply have a difficult time walking.

Camp Water Test

The water used in the Camp is from a drilled well, not from lake water, although, some camps around the lake do use the lake water as a water source. A water test was completed by a certified home inspector on 2/25/2020. The results are confirmed to meet the acceptable EPA limits. A copy of the water test is available for viewing from this website. The water is perfectly safe to drink, cook, or bathe. You can always bathe in the lake... Right! View the test results and the water test explanation by clicking on the associated links.
